Don't Blink! Tardis Cake

Description

My friend is a giant Doctor Who fan. So for her 18th Birthday I made her a 3D Tardis cake.

I spent about 8 hours creating a foot tall tardis cake, with windows on all sides, the door handle, the Police Box signs and instructions. The cake is 8 layers tall, double chocolate cake with milk chocolate frosting between each layer as well as for the coating so the butter-cream fondant would stick. Each side contains two layers of fondant; One for the main base then the second layer for the door and wall indents. The windows are made of white edible paper which easily stuck on with a little bit of frosting and/or water.

Something like this needs an internal structure. 5 dow rods screwed to a piece of plywood from the bottom, and then stacking the cakes on top of the dows will help your cake stand up better. Or even if you do 4 two layer cakes divided by cardboard within the cake and some dows can also be a help. The bottom few layers will collapse a bit because of the weight of the top most tiers. I think that's what ButterflyAnaes was talking about. Building it on a plate also causes some structure malfunction. If you have a place that offers Wilton classes at all, I would recommend the stacking class. It's one class, so it's not that expensive, but you get a LOT of useful info out of it. Also, the Fondant classes are brilliant. Fondant isn't an easy thing to work with so KUDOS on that. Overall, I'd give you an 8/10. I think, by looking through your galley, you have a potential of a 20/10. You have some great skills and I think that you could do very well in the cake world! Keep baking!
